As the new year rings in and audiences anticipate what films will become their new favorites, let us not forget what 2024 had to offer. Many films went under appreciated and it is my responsibility to inform you on which ones you should watch immediately.
From brilliant young actors such as Gabriel LaBelle, Mason Thames and Cailee Spaeny, who captivated viewers intensely, to directors such as Jason Reitman, who captured the essence of the revolutionary group of comedies in 1975, 2024 introduced people to what Hollywood has been missing.
“Saturday Night”
In 1975, Lorne Michaels struck gold with his innovative new show “Saturday Night Live,” which captured young talented comedians in their highest element. Reitman’s “Saturday Night” effortlessly reels us into the chaotic first night. The ensemble is magnificent in illustrating every emotion that could be experienced, as actors such as Rachel Sennott, LaBelle and Cory Michael Smith were so in tune with the people they were embodying.
“Saturday Night” is available to rent on Amazon Prime and Apple TV.
“Challengers”
“Challengers” made about $96 million worldwide, so I would not say this is a truly underrated film, but I would highly recommend it for people who are into the drama genre. This passionate story about love, lust and incredible passion is unique and incredibly exciting to watch.
Mike Faist, Josh O’Connor and Zendaya bring this film to life beautifully. Luca Guadagnino’s directing vision is executed perfectly and intensely by the ensemble.
For those interested in working amongst creatives in the film industry, the soundtrack, cinematography and acting can be a great guide. Although snubbed from getting a nomination at this year’s Oscar ceremony, this movie was fresh and full of risks, but that is what spoke to many. Creatives can feel motivated by this as the cast and crew created a great piece of work that could be considered a cult classic.
“Challengers” is streaming on MGM+.
“Civil War”
Four journalists make their way to the White House to capture the chaos which has erupted across the United States in Alex Garland’s “Civil War.” With the unbelievable Kirsten Dunst and exciting Cailee Spaeny, we are transported to Garland’s dystopian world. Viewers can relate this film to this moment in time. This movie illustrates what can happen when people fail to respect each other’s freedom, and when leaders abuse their power and authority. Speaking to several generations, it touches on the national disruption led by the lack of communication on the people’s part.
Within the discussion of politics, and this last year being an election year, a movie like this can allow people to see a glimpse of what can happen when powers go unchecked. Hopefully, Garland’s visual will allow people to feel the fear, chaos and commotion in a world that fails to respect the people’s right to the first amendment.
“Civil War” is currently streaming on Max.
“The Idea of You”
Do you like Harry Styles? Fun fact, this film, which stars Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine, who is best known for films such as “Red, White & Royal Blue” and “Purple Hearts”, brings this once Styles Wattpad fanfiction to life in Michael Showalter’s “ The Idea of You.”
With Valentine’s Day around the corner and several students wondering what they should do, I would highly recommend ordering in and watching a fun, light-hearted movie. For viewers who love romantic comedies, this is a film I would recommend. Also, for anybody who had a Tumblr phase, I think you will enjoy living out the universal fantasy of falling in love with a talented musician through Hathaway’s character. It does not take itself too seriously and is incredibly fun throughout its whole run.
“The Idea of You” is streaming on Amazon Prime.
“A Quiet Place: Day One”
Trapped in New York City, two strangers meet as the city unexpectedly gets invaded by killer alien creatures. From the world of “A Quiet Place,” this takes us back to how it all started. Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn star as the two leads Sam (Nyong’o) and Eric (Quinn). That should be the only statement you need to watch “A Quiet Place: Day One” tonight!
Sci-fi lovers and conspiracy theorists, this is the kind of film that was made for you. It makes you question and fear for the characters throughout the entire movie.
We rarely meet other characters, as the chaos forces Sam and Eric to go on this journey together, so do not be surprised if you get attached. I think suspense movies are too predictable nowadays, however I was not expecting the ending at all. It has a mix of everything: horror, suspense, romance and drama. It will take you on a ride.
“A Quiet Place: Day One” is streaming on Amazon Prime.
“The Greatest Night of Pop”
Jan. 28, 1985, was a historic day for pop music as the greatest musicians from that time united to create an anthem that would reign for many years to come. “The Greatest Night of Pop” is an in-depth documentary which stars great artists such as Lionel Richie and Bruce Springsteen to discuss the night when “We are the World” was recorded.
For audiences who are passionate about music, this is a beautiful documentary on the incredible talent and crew who brought this project to life. Richie explains the pressure and overall story beautifully. The movie gives a few conversations from people who worked behind the scenes and their genuine excitement towards this was inspiring. It reminds music lovers why artistry and unity is so important within this field. Viewers will leave feeling uplifted after watching this.
“The Greatest Night of Pop” is streaming on Netflix.
“Incoming”
Comedies are so back. Dave Chernin and John Chernin wrote and directed a hilarious modern comedy with a fantastic ensemble of fresh talent, such as Thames and Raphael Alejandro, who execute the universal first-ever high school party experience.
As many college students are entering a new chapter in their lives, I think this film is a friendly reminder of a period where new experiences felt incredibly intense. Although it may be cringy to revisit a part of yourself that may feel so far away, it can serve as a friendly reminder of how the present can feel heavy on many and can ease the anxious feelings that may be experienced in this new stage of their lives.
“Incoming” is streaming on Netflix.
Whether you enjoy music, thrillers, comedies or political commentaries, it is clear that the films of 2024 have something to offer for everyone. During your next study break, be sure to grab your favorite snack and beverage and sit down while one of these movies plays.
