The No. 9 University of Arizona softball team (30-5, 7-3 in Big 12) will travel to Provo, Utah on BYU (20-7) in a series taking place from March 27 to March 29.
The Wildcats last faced the Cougars last in 2021, dominating the latter half of the game to secure an 11-3 victory. After a slow start, Arizona exploded offensively in the final four innings, racking up 11 runs.
BYU entered the series against Arizona riding a five-game win streak, most recently securing a commanding 11-0 run-rule victory over Utah Valley. The Cougars have had three athletes on the Softball America’s Freshman Watchlist; Ilove’a Brittingham, Danica Acosta, and Jada Villegas. Brittingham has been a successful contributor both offensively and defensively. Acosta is a dynamic infielder and a key asset defensively. Left-hand pitcher Villegas is coming in as a fierce opponent on the mound and will be one to watch out for as she takes on Arizona’s explosive offense.
Arizona is looking to come out onto the field strong after ending its three-game series from March 21-23 against ASU with a tough 3-2 loss. Arizona struggled to generate early offense, allowing ASU to take a 3-0 lead in the third inning before the Wildcats fell just short of a comeback. However, the Wildcats did come away with two victories out of the three games against the Sun Devils in the series.
To avoid falling behind, Arizona will need to strike early and set the tone offensively. Devyn Netz will look to add to her impressive season total with her 11th home run, while Sydney Stewart aims to notch her 10th. On the mound, the Wildcats will rely on Saya Swain, who hopes to rebound and secure a win after dropping to 3-2 in the circle following the ASU matchup.
With both teams bringing firepower and momentum, this series promises to be a thrilling showdown in Provo.
