The Daily Wildcat had the opportunity to interview Moriah Baker-Lipin, the director of Marketing & President’s Club for Broadway In Tucson. Get to know why you might consider attending a show in this upcoming theater season.
Daily Wildcat: What relationship have people developed with Broadway in Tucson, and why would you say its presence in the city is important?
Moriah Baker-Lipin: “I mean, even just for myself, it’s wonderful that you have Broadway in your own backyard. It’s wonderful that even though I love community theatre shows, I go to community theater shows, that we can bring these national touring shows to Centennial Hall. I think it’s really wonderful for all ages, but especially for underrepresented groups and children, to see someone who looks like them up on stage. I see girls who go to the ‘Lion King’ and say, ‘Oh I’m a dancer,’ ‘That could be me one day,’ so it’s really a positive experience as an employee to see different people from different backgrounds and be able to see what a professional Broadway show looks like, without having to go to New York City.”
Daily Wildcat: What would you tell audiences about the 20th anniversary?
Moriah Baker-Lipin: “Yes, so it’s very exciting! We have a season subscription package that has 7 shows, it’s the most we’ve ever had and our biggest season yet. I remember when I was an intern and it went from five shows to six shows, it was a big deal, and now we’re at seven. It really is a nice exhibit of how Broadway in Tucson is being fostered by its community. We have two add-on shows that have been here before, so this is ‘The Book of Mormon’s’ fifth time coming, to really show that Tucson really shows up to the theatre.”
Daily Wildcat: What would you say to anybody who has never experienced Broadway?
Moriah Baker-Lipin: “I think we have something for everyone. If you want to take your father, go to ‘Back to the Future;’ you want to take your mom, go to ‘Hell’s Kitchen;’ you want to take your girlfriends, go to “& Juliet.” We’re very fortunate to have a very well-rounded season, so I would say find a show that you and your friends want to go to, step into the theater, don’t put pressure on yourself and go see what the power of theatre can do.”
