After enduring a season filled with more highs and lows than the local weather channel, the No. 15 Arizona women’s golf team now focuses its attention on the Pacific 10 Conference Championships.
The Wildcats, who enter the tournament as the No. 5 seed, will square off against all of its Pac-10 opponents, five of which are ranked in the top 15, at the par-72, 6,196-yard Broadmoor Golf Course in Seattle.
“”The only thing we can control is what we are doing,”” said Arizona head coach Greg Allen. “”We have to be able to make some putts, put the ball in the right spots and stay focused and we will be all right.””
The tournament features a 54-hole format, with each team shooting 18 holes per round. The final round will be played Wednesday.
The Wildcats are led by junior Alison Walshe, who ranks No. 12 individually and holds a per-round stroke average of 72.24.
The Westford, Mass., native claimed her third individual title the last time the Wildcats hit the links, when she shot a tournament total 2-under 214 in the BYU Dixie Classic on April 3-4. Walshe has five top-10 finishes and two top-20 finishes this season.
“”I have just been making sure that everything is intact with my game since the last tournament,”” Walshe said. “”We are just trying to think of (the Pac-10 Championships) as another tournament – that way we don’t psych ourselves out. We just need to keep our minds focused and everything will be fine.””
Also in the lineup for Arizona is junior Mary Jacobs, sophomores Adriana Zwanck and Amanda Wilson and freshman Brittany Benvenuto.
Zwanck has a 74.70 stroke average and three top-10 finishes, while Jacobs has finished in the top-20 six times. “”I have said all along that I like this team, I like what we are doing and I like what we have done all along,”” Allen said. “”I have said that I think something really special is going to happen toward the end, and now we are toward the end.””
