The Arizona volleyball team traveled to Malibu, Calif., this weekend for the Pepperdine Asics Classic, and after a winning start the Wildcats faltered in losing two straight matches.
The UA got off to a solid start with a sweep over Cal State Fullerton on Friday, going 3-0 for the match (25-17, 25-23, 25-22). Defensively, Arizona had one of their best games yet in holding the Titans offense to .037 in hitting.
The Wildcats fell short Saturday morning in the exhibition game against Jiangsu China where head coach Dave Rubio took the opportunity to rest his starters and let some of the younger newcomers can some playing time. The game resulted in Arizona falling to Jiangsu China 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-17), although the Wildcats did out-block China, 9-3.
Against Pepperdine, Arizona dropped the first two sets but fought their way back into the match taking Pepperdine to a fifth deciding set. In the end, the Wildcats lost in a close 2-3 (20-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20, 12-15) defeat.
Sophomore power hitter Madi Kingdon recorded double-digit hits in every match Arizona has played in so far, and continued to do so against Pepperdine. Junior transfer Chanel Brown and sophomore outside hitter Taylor Arizobal also recorded double-doubles in the match.
