An Arizona women’s basketball recruit was in stable condition last night in a Texas hospital after she and her mom were stabbed early yesterday morning at home by her younger sister, according to Las Cruces, N.M., police.
Marie McGee, 17, a senior at Mayfield High School in Las Cruces, was airlifted to Thomason hospital in El Paso, Texas, along with her mother Anita, 44, after being stabbed at 2:15 a.m. yesterday, by her 16-year-old sister Carissa, said Carlos Wooten, the Las Cruces Police Department’s public information officer.
Police questioned Carissa McGee before arresting and charging her with two counts of attempted first-degree murder at 4:30 p.m. yesterday.
Marie and Anita were admitted to the emergency room before being transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, where Anita was listed in critical condition and Marie was listed in stable condition Monday night, according to Thomason Hospital nursing supervisor Maria Diaz.
“”Investigators tell me they are recovering,”” Wooten said. “”Everything seems to be going in a positive direction.””
Wooten said that police and paramedics arrived on the scene to find two people, Anita and Marie, bleeding. The exact details and extent of the injuries sustained by both women were unknown, and could not be disclosed by the hospital, which cited privacy laws.
A press release did state that both women were treated at Thomason for numerous stab wounds.
Carissa and Marie were members of the Mayfield High School varsity basketball team, which finished second in the state after losing to Gallup High School 39-37 in the state Championship March 11.
Marie had already committed to play for Arizona head coach Joan Bonvicini’s Wildcats in the fall, while Carissa had received attention from many Division I schools this season, according to a report in the Las Cruces Sun-News.
“”This is a tragic situation,”” Bonvicini said. “”Our prayers are with Marie and her family.””
Marie, a 5-foot-8-inch guard, was slated to arrive at the UA for the beginning of summer classes, when she would begin workouts with the team.
Carissa is being held at the Dona Ana County Juvenile Detention Center, according to an LCPD press release.
