Men walk fine line of reason

A University of Arizona Police Department officer responded to a call of suspicious activity near the Cesar E. Chavez building around 3 a.m. on Monday. The officer spoke with a custodian who said he noticed four men who appeared to be stealing a bike. The officer searched the area and found four men walking down a bike path near Yavapai Residence Hall. One of the men had a black bag over his shoulder. He was pushing a mountain bike with a U-Lock attached to the front wheel.

The men identified themselves and told the officers they didn’t realize they were on campus. The man with the bike said the bike was his and that he had lost the key to the lock. The officer noticed the bike seat was unusually low for the man’s height. The man explained he had a bad back and liked the seat low. He said he found the bag near a dumpster and took it because it looked like it had been thrown away. The bag contained two CD players.

The officer took the bag and placed the bike into UAPD’s property department until the man could prove ownership. The men were given a warning for trespassing.

Toy gun, syringes and steel

A UAPD officer was flagged down by two people who said they saw a man wearing a white T-shirt and gray shorts attempting to remove a front tire from a bike and pulling on a U-Lock near Speedway Boulevard and Mountain Avenue on Sunday around noon.

The officer found a man matching the description riding a blue bike while pulling a black bike away from the bike rack. The officer told him to stop and the man sat on the ground. One of the two people was able to positively identify the man as the same one they saw earlier. The man said the black bike was his and it got a flat tire a few days ago so he left it at the bike rack in order to come back and fix it later. He returned on the blue bike so he could take the black one home to fix. He also had two unused syringes and a toy handgun in his pocket.

The man told the officer he is currently homeless and spends about $20 on a weekly injection of methamphetamine. The black mountain bike and the toy gun were placed into the UAPD compound for safe keeping.

Men get booked for library fight

A UAPD officer spoke with an employee of the UA Main Library on Monday at 10:30 a.m about a fight that occurred there the day before. The employee said he wanted the two people involved in the fight to be excluded from the library.

The officer conducted a search of all the past law enforcement contacts with the men involved. He found multiple arrests for assault, disorderly conduct and trespassing for both. One of the men had previously been contacted by UAPD for viewing pornography in the library and fighting. The other had been contacted by UAPD for assault. The officer served the on of the men with an Exclusionary Order after being told that the man had returned to the library. The other man’s order was given to dispatch to be served upon future police contacts.

Lost laptop looking for owner

A laptop left unattended at Coronado Residence Hall was turned into UAPD on Monday. The Dell Inspiron laptop was silver, black and white. A charger for the laptop was turned in as well. The owner of the items is unknown at this time and the items were placed into UAPD property and evidence until they could be claimed.
