The No. 1-ranked Arizona Wildcats men’s swimming team finds itself in fourth place with 118 points after the first day of the NCAA Championships in Federal Way, Wash.
Freshman Kevin Cordes, the 400-medley and the 200-freestyle relay teams helped push the Wildcats to their current position. Coredes swam the breaststroke leg of the 400-yard medley relay, recording a time of 50.62 — pushing the Wildcats into second place in this event.
In the 200-individual medley, senior Austen Thompson and sophomore Miles Joyce produced a fifth- and seventh-place finish.
Arizona is behind third-place Texas (128.5), second-place Stanford (140) and first-place California (157.5) — all teams that the Wildcats beat during the dual meet season.
The Wildcats will continue their quest for a national championship Friday when preliminary rounds start at 11 a.m. The finals will begin at 7 p.m.
