Arizona alum Terry Francona was fired as the manager of the Boston Red Sox at the end of last season. Now, Francona will have some company in Brad Mills, his former college roommate, who will be joining him on the managerial unemployment line.
The Houston Astros fired Mills as manager, along with a hitting and first base coach, in the midst of losing a league-high 82 games.
Mills, who was drafted out of the UA in 1979 to the Montreal Expos, was dismissed after about three years on the job and a record of 171-274. After two straight losses to the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Mills-led Astros lost 59 of the last 76 games.
