The former beauty queen and second-year UA law student accused of the kidnapping and torture of her ex-boyfriend was allowed to leave Arizona to go back to her hometown yesterday morning.

Kumari Fulbright went before Pima County Superior Court Judge Richard Nichols to request moving to Dallas to await trial.

Fulbright only stayed because she is a student at the UA, but as she is currently suspended from campus, she asked the court if she could go to Texas to await trial, said David Ricker, community relations coordinator for Pima County Superior Court.

Fulbright and two other men are accused of kidnapping, holding and torturing her ex-boyfriend at gunpoint and knifepoint, according to court documents.

Fulbright was released on $50,000 bail in December.

She was allowed to leave the state of Arizona on the condition that Pretrial Services would monitor her, Ricker said.

One of Fulbright’s attorneys also withdrew from the case. Fulbright’s other attorney, Marc Beginin from Detroit, is working to find a new co-council who is licensed to practice in Arizona, Ricker said.

Fulbright is required to return to Tucson for a court date April 1.
