UA is one of the most bike friendly campuses in the U.S., even earning a Silver Award from the League of American Bicyclists. However, many bikes get stolen on campus while students are studying, working or in class. Here are a few tips to keep your bike safe:

Lock it like it’s hot

Investing in good locks is crucial. A sturdy U-lock can provide security while you’re gone. Don’t just lock your bike from frame to bike rack. Instead, take the U-lock and lock through the frame and the front or back tire for added security. By locking not only the frame of your bike to the bike rack, but the tires as well, it will make it harder for thieves to steal the tires of your bike. If you plan on leaving your bike locked up for long periods of time, add a cable to your lock-up routine. With the cable, you can run it through both tires and the frame, deterring thieves. 

Your bike shouldn’t be out later than you

Lock up your bike in a well-lit and high foot traffic area. If possible, avoid leaving your bike locked up overnight. But, if you plan on leaving your bike overnight or for extended periods of time while on campus, UA Parking and Transportation provides bike lockers and enclosures in various locations on campus. According to UA Parking and Transportation, bike enclosures are “convenient, gated, keyless entry locked enclosures with individual assigned spaces that are security fenced, covered and protected from inclement weather.” Bike lockers are priced at $100 for the year, while bike enclosures run $35 annually. No tip necessary

If you find yourself short on time in between classes, but still want to make sure your bike is secure, utilize UA’s free Bike Valet. The Bike Valet is conveniently located just off the UA Mall, in front of the Nugent Building and is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. To use UA Bike Valet, your bike must be registered, which is free and can be done online. Registering your bike may also work as a deterrent from thieves and can help UA police identify your bike if it is stolen.
