Greek gone wild
On Aug. 29, a UA student was transported to the University of Arizona Medical Center for extreme intoxication.
An officer from the University of Arizona Police Department was patrolling the area of North Vine Avenue and East Drachman Street at 12:10 a.m. and saw the student leaning against a nearby light pole in the parking lot of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity house.
The student appeared to be very ill and tried to vomit while leaning forward, swaying and holding her stomach. As the officer approached her, she attempted to walk away toward a nearby taxi that was waiting for her. She was stumbling, however, and had to lean on a nearby vehicle for support. The officer approached her and told her he needed to speak with her. The officer immediately noticed that she had a strong smell of intoxicants on her breath, red and watery eyes and was unable to stand up.
The student first identified herself as being 17 years old, and then said she was 19 years old and would not tell the officer where she had been or what she had consumed. As the officer was speaking with the student, he observed groups of people who all appeared to be intoxicated leaving the fraternity house, some yelling “Cops, cops,” as they left.
The student then began to dry vomit and the officer called the Tucson Fire Department and University Emergency Medical Services to evaluate the student.
The student was transported to UAMC for extreme intoxication and ordered to complete a student diversion program by the Dean of Students Office.
Raize and blaze
Two UAPD officers responded to a claim that there was a strong odor of marijuana coming from a third floor room of the Manzanita-Mohave Residence Hall on Aug. 30.
The officers made contact with the reporting party and the on-duty residence assistant at 1:05 p.m. The RA showed the officers to the room she suspected the smell of marijuana was coming from.
When the officers arrived at the room, they could hear loud music and people talking inside. They smelt an odor of burnt marijuana coming specifically from the room. They knocked on the door, and a man, who appeared to be surprised and had bloodshot eyes, answered. Officers said he also appeared to be very anxious and confused. The student confirmed himself as the resident of the room and said that there were three others in the room with him.
One of those three others in the room was the second resident of the third-floor room and asked to speak with one of the officers privately. When speaking with the officer he said that his roommate smokes marijuana frequently, and that he does not like it and it is becoming a problem. He added that the roommate had been “waking and baking” in the room while he was trying to sleep that day.
While the officer and resident were speaking privately, the other resident gave the other officer a bag of drug paraphernalia that included a plastic vaporizer used to contain marijuana vapors and a napkin with a small amount of marijuana in it.
The resident said that the paraphernalia was his and was diverted to the Dean of Students Office for marijuana possession and marijuana paraphernalia possession.
