Okkervil River never ceases to create mind-blowing, lyrically complex, yet oh-so-accessible music. Their new CD The Stand-Ins arrives Sept. 9 via Jagjaguwar, and is an indie gem. The Stand-Ins is the second half of Okkervil’s double album. The first half, The Stage Names, was released last year.

With an album as epic as The Stage Names followed by an equally grand piece, it’s hard to delve into the details and give justice to the stories being told. Will Sheff, the band’s singer and main lyricist, is a magician with words, painting emotions with simple, direct lines like, “”no one waving for me just the shoreline receding.”” And his charmingly unique voice fits perfectly into this novel-esque album.

The album begins with an instrumental nuanced with a hint of melancholy that quickly turns into something deeper, setting up for the coming songs. “”Lost Coastlines,”” the first track to include lyrics, is a laidback and honest song, just uppy enough for the beginning of the album. It then transitions to a country-inspired song called “”Singer Songwriter”” that reveals the novel-like lyrical quality characteristic of Sheff’s music.

It is impossible to explain the stories told in this album, but that’s why you must go out and pick it up. As an added bonus, Okkervil River will be playing Club Congress on Sept. 26.
