The first awards ceremony of the season, the Golden Globes, convened Monday evening, as luminaries from the movie and TV industries showed up to be recognized for their on-screen excellence by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Yet who wears what oftentimes receives more media attention than who wins what.
Many women this year seemed to gravitate toward gowns in neutral shades, though some glammed up with a little sparkle. Strapless seemed to be the style of choice for the evening, with decollete garments. Up-dos were thankfully rare – they always scream “”prom”” – with tresses commonly down in cascading curls. For those who missed the Globes or the dozens of celebrity news shows that have aired days of commentary, here is what the Wildcat thought of this year’s attire:
For being such a style icon, Sienna Miller’s dress was awfully disappointing. In a cowl neck dress by Marchesa with a metallic motif bodice, the dress was quite tacky on the usually chic and cool Miller. She made up for it partially, however, with her Victorian-influenced do, which was rather cute.
Reese Witherspoon was the minimalist belle of the ball in a simple yellow, knee-length strapless number by Nina Ricci, which accentuated Witherspoon’s thinner figure. The look was fresh with her blown-out shoulder length hair and modern bangs.
It’s not a night of fashion without the woman of fashion herself, Sarah Jessica Parker. She radiated in a gold number by L ‘Wren Scott with a unique brooch. Parker, appropriately, introduced this year’s fashion film, “”The Devil Wears Prada.””
Another fellow accessory wearer, Jack Nicholson, had on his typical black shades, which played up what was otherwise a basic tuxedo. Nicholson was sitting front-and-center during the ceremony, causing many who went up behind the podium to give him some form of a shout-out. Who could ignore that joker grin looking right up at you?
Sometimes she’s on and sometimes she’s off, but for this year’s Globes, Drew Barrymore was definitely on. In a pale pink strapless dress by John Galliano for Christian Dior, Barrymore resembled the angelic look she exuded so many years ago in “”E.T.”” She made the right choices by keeping everything simple and sweeping her hair back into a whimsical bun. Now, if only her movies were as good as she looked.
