Dear Students,
This is an exciting time of year when our campuses come alive with new and returning students, fresh with hope and motivation to achieve new goals. I am proud to say welcome and welcome back to all students—your enthusiasm and ambition to achieve your dreams is exhilarating!
Without a doubt, your decision to pursue a university education and earn a degree is one of the wisest life choices you can make. Your experience at the UA will provide enlightening learning experiences and help you build a strong foundation for personal success, and will hopefully offer opportunities to form new friendships and find mentors, with many of whom you will form unique and life-long bonds. I encourage you to take time to appreciate the pure joy of learning and discovery that will unfold in front of you every day.
As the new academic year commences, following are a few recommendations that will aid you on your journey through college and help you reach your academic goals.
Work hard — University classes are demanding of your time and intellect. It’s imperative that you keep up in classes and seek help if you fall behind through available services such as tutoring. Studying for classes will serve you well in ultimately reaching your goals and in having a positive attitude about your academic experiences. And, if you don’t know something, don’t be afraid to ask. We value our student voices.
Embrace campus life — Many students say the key to their success entails not only staying on top of coursework, but becoming involved in campus life. With literally hundreds of clubs and organizations offered on our university campuses, there is something for everyone. Whether it’s student government, an interest that pertains to your major or a club that is simply enjoyable, take advantage of the opportunities that are waiting for you.
Be safe — Especially for first-year students who may be away from home for the first time, university life can seem at once overwhelming yet incredibly freeing and fun. It’s imperative that students keep safety as a foremost priority. We’re steadfastly committed to student safety and continuously work to provide a safe environment, but remember that you play a role in this too through your choices. The University of Arizona has many resources to help you be safe and be a successful student.
And, choose happiness — Remember that these years may well be some of the most memorable of your life. Enjoy this time when you will make lifelong friends, engage with some of the brightest minds anywhere and learn concepts that broaden your knowledge and understanding of the world.
