If you’ve been listening to any rock station the past month, you’re probably already sick of “”Dani California,”” the first single from Stadium Arcadium, the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ newest album.

The song is anything but timeless. Not to mention the band has come under fire after many aspects of the song were found to be similar to Tom Petty’s “”Mary Jane’s Last Dance.”” The speculation begs the question: Have the Chili Peppers lost some originality in their 20 years and nine albums of bandhood? Let’s just say this: It’s highly unlikely you will be blown away by their latest creation.

Putting weaknesses aside, the new two-disc album is not all bad; it just lacks the variety of many of their past albums. In Stadium Arcadium, there’s not one song as high energy as many of the tracks found on older albums Blood Sugar Sex Magik or Californication. And there’s nothing as riveting as the slower paced favorite “”Soul to Squeeze.””

Given that there are 28 tracks on the two discs I thought at least some songs would really pop out, but that is not the case. The band does show its talent (to a lesser extent) with the well-known guitar and slap bass heavy songs such as “”21st Century.”” The pop sounding “”Make you Feel Better”” sounds more like, well, a pop song than a Red Hot Chili Peppers song. Overall Stadium Arcadium seems to be lacking the energy the Chili Peppers usually have.

At least the band has shown that it’s still making music. I’m sure the Chili Peppers will continue for a long time but for now, the new album requires more energy and more impressive songs.
