Despite four straight Pac-12 Conference losses, No. 20 Arizona gymnastics will attempt to one-up its in-state rival ASU on Monday when the Wildcats travel to Tempe. The meet will begin live on Pac-12 Networks at 7 p.m.
Arizona has remained consistent throughout most of the season, giving top Pac-12 competitors many scares.
Head Coach Matchup
The ASU Sun Devils rely on head coach René Lyst, who is in her second season. Lyst previously coached the Arkansas Razorbacks for 13 years. Arizona gymnastics head coach Tabitha Yim is in her first year with the GymCats program, but Yim and Lyst have much in common. Both have previously served as assistant coaches at Stanford.
Sun Devils’ Season
ASU has struggled throughout the season, most recently earning the team a high score of 194.725. Its record is 1-7 (0-4 Pac-12). The Sun Devils have found themselves on the wrong side of the winner’s circle against Pac-12 opponents University of Washington, Oregon State University, Stanford University and University of California, Berkeley. In every meet this season, except for the one against Texas Women’s University, Arizona has bested the Sun Devils’ season high score.
Notable Floor Matchup
Taylor Allex will go head to head against Arizona’s best on-the-floor rotation duo, Kennady Schneider and Jessie Sisler. Allex’s career high against Cal was a score of 9.950. Schneider’s career high on floor is 9.900, while Sisler nailed a 9.950 and is reigning Pac-12 Floor Champion.
Key Devils to watch
Allex and freshman Katelyn Lentz are the top two competitors for ASU. Allex holds the high marks this season in both vault and floor. Lentz competes in the all-around and holds the season high of 38.975. She also has the season high on beam with a score of 9.825.
Territorial Cup Points
At the moment, ASU leads Arizona in the Territorial Cup Series 5.5-1.5. The Wildcats will look to add to their total and inch closer in the Monday meet.
