The dancers in local photographer Ed Flores’ photographs seem to move. His most recent body of work, titled “Between Heaven and Earth,” captures UA dancers in divine motion.
Premiering today in the Stevie Eller Dance Theatre lobby at 5 p.m., Flores’ one-day exhibition will show in conjunction with the UA dance dress rehearsal of “Spring Collection,” allowing visitors to follow the dancers from still life to stage.
Flores, a self-taught photographer, has a sensational ability to merge vision and movement into a single medium. Working primarily with dancers as his subject matter, he captures their the raw motion, whose moments are evanescent. True art is no more than an extension of our physical selves, and Flores’ photographs embody both the physical prowess and soulfulness that dancers exude.
Although his camera can only capture half of the grace and fierce nature of a dancer, Flores said the appreciation of dance is translated into his images.
Flores’ pictures have graced the covers of both national and international magazines and publications such as Dance Spirit and Dance Magazine have used his work. Flores’ big break came in 1997, when one of his first dance photographs appeared on the cover of a magazine, known then as Dance Teacher Now, a large-circulation dance magazine.
He said that though he shoots many assignments, “the crown jewel are the photographs that dancers and I create together.” It is this collaboration of movement and still imagery that produces a celestial quality in Flores’ work.
Flores’ work is an exercise in contrast and dynamics. His use of subtle variations in lighting techniques and large format angles add a sense of depth to his work, placing dancers in the perfect light.
“Between Heaven and Earth” deftly displays Flores’ impeccable sense of lighting and his view on the movement of human bodies.
