Senior James Farris didn’t look like his usual dominant self on the mound to start the game, and he was the first to admit it cost Arizona baseball in its 9-1 Friday night loss to Seton Hall.

“This game’s on me; I definitely lost it for our team,” Farris said.

The Pirates (5-2) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning on five hits and the Wildcats’ (6-3) bats couldn’t respond. Seton Hall ace Josh Prevost held a perfect game through the opening four frames and ended up giving up just one run on five hits and striking out seven over eight innings of work.

But UA junior catcher Jordan Berger, who went 1-for-4 with the team’s only RBI, was more disappointed with himself and his teammates than impressed by Prevost.

“I think we made him [Prevost] look a lot better than he was,” Berger said. “I think offensively tonight we didn’t have a good approach because we’ll be facing better arms than that, and we have to be ready to face those kind of guys.”

Farris would settle down after the rough first, holding the Pirates scoreless the following three innings. However he would allow two more runs to cross, one in the fifth and seventh.

After the game Arizona head coach Andy Lopez showed once again he picks his starting rotation with the mentality, “what have you done for me lately?”

“The challenging part is if [sophomore] Cody Hamlin continues to pitch well, he could eventually be our Friday night guy,” Lopez said. “I love my wife; 30 years of marriage she’s put up with me, but she’s not throwing on Friday nights.”

Lopez also said that because of recent poor fielding, Bobby Dalbec’s starting first basemen role could soon be handed over to fellow freshman Michael Hoard. Dalbec committed one of the Wildcats’ three total errors in the fourth inning.

Arizona looks to even the three game series up Saturday at 2 p.m. The right-handed Hamlin (2-0) will match up against Anthony Elia (1-1).
