The UA Disability Resource Center wheelchair basketball team will host its first tournament as part of a new division in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association in the Student Recreation Center this weekend.
The Wildcats have switched conferences, from the Intercollegiate Division to the Championship Division. Instead of playing other college teams, the UA will play adult teams, many of which are represented by NBA teams.
This weekend, the Wildcats will play the Phoenix Wheelchair Suns and the Albuquerque Kings twice each. Games are slated for 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Saturday and 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
“”There are some negatives about playing in the Championship Division because we like playing against our friends and people we know,”” said UA senior Eric Harris. “”But both levels are tough. The college level has paralympians, and so does the new division we’re in. It’s just a new challenge.
“”But it’s exciting, because you also get veterans that have been around a while, and they really know how to play,”” Harris said.
