If you’ve got a nickle in your pocket, then you’ve got the funds to buy some local artwork at the Fine Art: Five Cents event today at Hotel Congress. Offering great music, charity and affordable artwork, Fine Art: Five Cents is a series of events promoting arts access and equality by making fine art works available for just 5 cents.
All money made at the event goes directly to Downtown Radio Tucson, which is a noncommercial, low-powered radio station featuring rock ‘n’ roll music from across several decades. Some of the bands performing during the event include Saint Maybe, the Modeens, Sun Bones and Wolfgang Family Band.
Saint Maybe is a band that celebrates a traditional ’60s sound with a modern groove. Its music represents a new generation of rock ‘n’ roll that every music fan can appreciate. The Modeens have a sound also embracing ’60s rock ‘n’ roll, but their fast-paced psychedelic tunes keep the crowd lively and engaged. The Sun Bones are based out of Tucson and have performed in various venues, such as Cartel Coffee Lab. The band’s sound embodies a classic rock vibe with a contemporary indie tone. The Wolfgang Family Band has many different acts within it, but Wolfgang, Lady Lark and Bitterroots will be making appearances at this event.
The artists to be featured include Chris Koval, Jennifer Bao, Holly Randall and Christopher Stuart Wilson. Koval is a photographer who draws inspiration from the human spirit and the drama of life. He said patience and spontaneity are crucial to his photographs. Randall’s work delves into character depictions that convey her love of quirkiness.
A self-proclaimed “abstract realist with an impressionistic filter to the surReal,” according the event page, Wilson’s goal is to destroy any boundaries separating art from the real world.
“My art is created through an aetheric channeling of fantastic energy that knows no limits,” Wilson said.
Bao’s art exemplifies a vast knowledge of lines and color. There is an originality to her work that magnifies reality in simplistic forms.
The featured artists will have their artwork sold for a great value for event patrons. Artwork from an international collection will be sold for just 5 cents for one piece and $10 for two pieces. The surprise factor of the event is that all of the artwork is placed face down, so attendees get to go home with a random piece of artwork.
A great thing about this event is that it fits directly into a college student’s budget, although many Tucson locals will also attend for the purpose of embracing local art and Downtown Radio Tucson. Attendees will not only be entertained by great music, but the artwork being sold will be coded according to “common, uncommon, rare and mythic rare,” according to the event’s page.
Admission is $10 at the door, and the event is taking place at 7 p.m. at Hotel Congress in downtown Tucson.
