Arizona volleyball continued their tremendous 11-0 win streak as they swept the Wildcat Classic in Tucson without giving up a single set in the tournament. We also look at soccer, in which Gianna Christiansen stood out for the Wildcats this week.
Team: Volleyball
The Wildcats volleyball team continues to showcase their dominance in tournament play, keeping its 11-0 streak alive. This outing proved to be one of their best, with the Wildcats competing in matchups against North Dakota State University and Southern Utah University at home in McKale Center. Arizona won each set by roughly 5 points, all without letting the opposing team win a single set.
The Wildcats have been led by several key players this season, including fifth-year Jaelyn Hodge and freshmen Avery Scoggins and Carlie Cisneros. Scoggins and Cisneros are just entering the program, yet they have been performing like seasoned professionals.
Hodge put up the team high for kills with 25 for the tournament while Cisneros was a close second, putting up 21. Cisneros also recorded a team-high 4 service aces and 21 digs during the tournament. Scoggins was crucial for the Wildcats, putting up 75 assists in the two games.
The Wildcats open up their Big 12 season on Sept. 25 against Baylor University in Waco, Texas. This will be just the second time in program history that Arizona has faced off against Baylor, the last time resulting in a 3-0 Wildcat victory on Sept. 8, 2000.
Player: Gianna Christiansen
Arizona soccer faced Baylor and Texas Christian University over the past week, breaking even with a 1-0 win against the Baylor Bears and a 1-0 loss against the TCU Horned Frogs.
In the outing against Baylor, the crucial winning goal came from Wildcats’ Christiansen. Christiansen scored in the 58th minute off an assist from Shanti Weddington. The Wildcats’ defense would aid for the remainder of the match, limiting most chances for the Bears which led to the Wildcats’ victory as time expired.
This game provided a special point for Christiansen: the goal would be her fourth of the season. This fourth goal would be the highest season total of her career. Christiansen has captured her 4 goals in fewer games and minutes than it took her to reach 3 goals last season. This put her tied for first when it came to game-winning goals, tying Nicole Dallin with 2 goals. This comes just a couple weeks after she put up a career-high 2-goal performance against the University of California, Irvine.
Christiansen and the Arizona soccer team have their first Big 12 home game on Sept. 26 against the University of Cincinnati.
