The University of Arizona soccer team beat University of Cincinnati 2-0 on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. at Murphey Field. The Wildcats are now (7-3-1) on the season and (2-2) in conference play.
Arizona is coming off another Big 12 award, which was given to freshman Zoe Mendiola for Big 12 freshman of the week. This was a highly anticipated matchup as the Wildcats are undefeated at home so far this season. The tempo of the game started off strong, with the Wildcats keeping the ball in Cincinati’s territory. A yellow card was given to a Cincinnati player after an unsportsmanlike contact play, which injured goalie Olivia Ramey in the first half. Ramey was able to continue on throughout the game.
Gianna Christansen once again showed her dominance on this team, scoring a swift goal to put the Wildcats on the board first. Immediately after this goal, Nyota Katembo laid one in adding another point for the Wildcats.
Going into halftime, Arizona was up 2-0 over Cincinnati.
The second half kicked off with renewed intensity. Arizona, confident after their first half, pressed up the pitch, forcing Cincinnati into mistakes. Cincinnati, however, refused to back down trying to get a goal, but Arizona did not give. The Wildcat shut out Cincinnati and won 2-0.
The Wildcats’ next game will be this Sunday, Sept. 29th, at home at 11:30 am on Murphey Field.
