Arizona women’s tennis kicked off its season in Tucson with the University of Arizona Invitational Friday through Sunday. The Wildcats finished with a 27-13 tournament record, 19-9 in singles and 8-4 in doubles, and lived up to expectations throughout the weekend.
The team had solid doubles play, including an undefeated first day. The doubles pairing of sophomore Devin Chypyha and freshman Camila Wesbrooks advanced to the doubles finals on the last day of the tournament, but fell short of a final victory.
Wesbrooks had a sensational tournament, going 3-1 in singles play in what was her collegiate debut.
Assistant coach Marco Matteucci noted the team’s ability to continue strong play into the final day of the tournament.
“Being able to win matches in the third set on the last day of a tournament shows we are on track and competing,” Matteucci said.
No. 43-ranked Lauren Marker was not featured in the tournament but will make her season debut this week in the Riviera All-American Championships.
If the University of Arizona Invitational was any reflection of the season to come, it would be one of many positives for the Wildcats.
