A Kennewick woman is accused of burning her son’s hand on an electric griddle because he got into trouble at school.

Maria G. Garcia-Chavez, 41, pleaded innocent Wednesday in Benton County Superior Court to second-degree assault of a child.

Her trial is set for June 20.

Prosecutors allege Garcia-Chavez became angry with her 12-year-old son April 20 about issues at school.

Garcia-Chavez — who also has the last name of Guadalupe Garcia – turned on an electric griddle to 400 degrees, and then the boy’s hand on it after it was hot, court documents state.

She held it in place on the griddle while telling her son, “”That’s what you get,”” documents said.

The boy suffered second-degree burns, and his mother allegedly failed to treat the wounds or get immediate medical treatment for him.

The following morning, Garcia-Chavez asked to see the boy’s hand. She told him that if he got into trouble again she would burn his mouth instead, court documents said.

The boy was later taken to the hospital by police.

The judge ordered Garcia-Chavez to stay away from six people, including the victim and four other minors, while the case is pending.
