Arizona volleyball finally snapped out of its five-match losing streak, defeating Oregon 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 19-25, 26-24). Despite it only being their 12th victory of the season, it seems that the Wildcats learned their lesson from Friday by competing until the match was truly finished.
Devyn Cross added a typical impressive performance to her All-American-type season, contributing 16 kills and 5 blocks. Paige Whipple led the team with 17 kills and had an ace, while Julia Patterson had a remarkable 48 assists, twice as many as the assist leader for Oregon, Elise Ferreira, who had 24.
The situation seemed like déjà vu in the fourth set for the Wildcats, as they trailed Oregon 13-19 at one point after just dropping the third set. After blowing a 2-0 start against Oregon State on Friday, the team came out rejuvenated after a Head Coach David Rubio timeout to assure they would not have to suffer the same heartbreak twice in one weekend.
Arizona rallied back and finished off the match with a 26-24 victory in the final set, largely in part to the late elevated play of Whipple. As for Oregon, they are now 6-13 heading to California this next weekend to play California and Stanford.
The next match for the Wildcats is on Friday against Colorado at the CU Events Center. The last time the two teams faced each other, Arizona won by a final score of 3-0.
