Arizona sophomore Peter Zimmer advanced to the qualifying round of the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championship in Tulsa, Okla., which runs until Sunday.
Zimmer will be back on the court today after defeating junior Irving Morales of Troy in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. He will join teammate Claudio Christen, a junior who was selected for the qualifying round prior to the event.
The two will also pair up in the doubles draw, which begins today.
Zimmer came out firing at his first trip to the tournament in the pre-qualifying round when he defeated Texas Christian Radu Barbu, 6-2, 7-6.
He then fell behind in his second match of the day by losing a tiebreaker in the first set to Christopher Racz of Tennessee 6-7, but went on to beat Racz by winning the final two sets of the match 6-4, 7-5.
Junior Bruno Alcala did not experience the same success as Zimmer, as he lost in the pre-qualifying round to Tulsa’s Lucque Maasdorp 6-7(2), 6-4, 2-6. This loss came after an encouraging performance at the Costa Mesa Futures tournament in Costa Mesa, Calif., two weeks ago when he lost in the final round of the event.
The All-American is the first of three college “”grand slams”” in which Arizona will compete, with a field made up of the nation’s best collegiate tennis players.
