The UA track and field team is just one week away from returning to Boise, Idaho, for the NCAA Championships, and its last chance to qualify is at the Iowa NCAA State Qualifiers in Ames, Iowa tomorrow.
Senior Stephen Sambu, juniors Nick Ross and Edgar Rivera-Morales and sophomore Lawi Lalang have already shown outstanding performances this season earning bids. As for the women, juniors Brigetta Barrett and Julie Labonte also hold tickets, having consistently won their events this season thus far.
“Training will not be too hard until NCAAs, I think I am ready,” Sambu said. “I am definitely looking for a championship as a senior.”
This weekend, there remains a few Wildcats who will give it their all as they continue to chase a bid. Sophomore runner Elvin Kibet was just a second short of breaking a school record in Seattle last week and is more motivated than ever to outperform the competition and earn an invitation to NCAAs this year. Close behind is junior Jen Bergman. Sophomore sprinter Tamara Pridgett is also on the rise as an up-and-coming contender.
“I am so happy with my performance,” Kibet said. “I am in really good shape right now and am very motivated to push even harder.”
