The Arizona women’s tennis team embarked on a road trip to Texas this past weekend for matches against Rice University and University of Houston.

The Wildcats came out firing against Houston, dominating almost every aspect of the game and resulting in a 7-0 sweep for Arizona.

As has been the case in most of the team’s matches this season, the underclassmen helped the team get through tough moments and ultimately prevail.

Freshman Camila Wesbrooks and sophomore Devin Chyphya both had solid outings, each winning in two sets.

Head coach Vicky Maes was pleased with the team’s play.

“We are very happy with this win,” Maes said in a press release. “We came out strong on all courts. We played hard at every position, and did what we needed in order to maintain control of all the matches.”

Arizona’s sweep of Houston is the team’s second of the spring season, an impressive feat for this team, which has shown large growth since the fall season.

Despite the positive start to the weekend, things took a sour turn for the Wildcats when they were defeated 1-6 by the No. 31 Rice Owls.

The trouble began when Rice took first points in doubles.

Senior Inge Hendrikx and junior Samantha Czarniak were unable to beat the Owls senior/freshman duo including the No. 41-ranked International Tennis Association player Katherine Ip and Emily Smith.

The Owls continued their dominance, beating Arizona 5-1 in singles play with the only point coming from Czarniak. She was the one Wildcat able to come out victorious against a talented Rice team.

Despite the defeat, Maes gave her team high praise on the way they played despite being down for most of the match.

“Sure, the matches didn’t turn our way, but we played with a lot of heart and emotion, and we created a ton of opportunities for ourselves because of that,” she said.

The Wildcats return home this weekend to face San Diego, NAU and New Mexico State.
