Women’s tennis impressive in Day One

The UA women’s tennis team got off to a fast start at the ITA Regional Tournament in San Diego Thursday, winning all of its first-round matches.

In singles play, UA freshman Sarah Landsman defeated Long Beach State’s Stephanie Jeanes, while fellow freshman Deborah Castany bested San Diego State’s Emma Cioffi.

Sophomore Jane Huh was the other Wildcat to advance out of the first round, defeating San Diego State’s Olivia Colman.

Landsman, Castany, and Huh were all greeted in the second round by teammates Ariane Masschelein and Danielle Steinberg. Both Masschelein and Steinberg – a junior and senior, respectively – were awarded first-round byes.

The second round was another success for Arizona as Landsman, Castany, Masschelein and Steinberg all advanced to Friday’s round of 32.

While Huh dropped her second-round match, she will still play on Friday as she and Steinberg advanced to Friday’s doubles round.

With all five players advancing to Friday’s action, assistant coach Ryan Stotland considered Thursday a great success for the program.

“”We’re very proud of the way all the girls played,”” Stotland said. “”It was a great effort and we hope it continues into the weekend.””
