“Fox, Esler advance in U.S. Amateur Championships”

Four Arizona men’s golfers aren’t spending their first week of school in classes; instead they opted for the golf course.

But two of them will be coming home soon.

Senior Josh Esler and sophomore Ben Fox advanced in the 2006 U.S. Amateur Championship held in Chaska, Minn., that started Monday and continues until Sunday.

After 36 holes of stroke play, the pair moved on to the match play event.

Though senior Brian Prouty and sophomore Tyler Neal missed the cut, the four golfers marked the most representatives Arizona has ever had in the tournament.

In yesterday’s second round, Fox shot a 4-under-par 67, leaving him two over for the tournament after a 6-over 78 in round one.

He sits in a tie for 30th place.

Esler, meanwhile, shot a 3-under 68 in round two to place himself in 43rd place at 3-over after shooting a 78 in round one.

Prouty finds himself on the outside looking in after rounds of 76 and 73, finishing in a tie for 100th place at 6-over 149 for the tournament, narrowly missing the cut, set at 5-over.

After a frustrating 11-over 83 in round one, Neal found his stroke in round two, shooting a 1-under 70. But at 10-over for the tournament, it wasn’t enough, tying for 201st place.
