Christen ends tourney season on high note

Another big tournament, another slew of success for Claudio Christen of the men’s tennis team.

Upsets, aces and aggressiveness highlighted the 6-foot-5 senior’s fall season finale at the ITA West Regional Tennis Championships at Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif.

Christen plowed through the singles draw, defeating No. 7 seed Juan Carlos Rebaza of ASU 6-3, 7-5 to reach the quarterfinals.

“”He’s proven that he’s one of the upper(-tier) players in the country,”” UA head coach Tad Berkowitz said of Christen. “”I was proud of the way he competed and played this week.””

Christen’s run concluded Saturday with a loss to No. 1-seeded Andre Begemann of Pepperdine, 6-4, 6-2.

Christen’s ability to control points and dictate play on any opponent, Berkowitz said, has allowed his confidence to rise as the team’s best player.

Last season, Christen played as the team’s No. 1 player for the first time in his career. With much-improved confidence and belief this year, Christen is ready to compete against anyone, Berkowitz said.

In the round of 32 doubles draw, Christen paired up with freshman Jay Goldman to defeat Siddharth Alapati and Taylor Leiby of Fresno State, 9-8.

Fifth-seeded Chris Coetzee and Tom Liversage of San Diego ended the duo’s run with an 8-6 loss.

Goldman posted five wins in the consolation singles bracket before losing a hard-fought battle in the finals against Fresno State’s Tejesvi Veerepaili, 6-1, 3-6, 10-6.

“”We’re really doing a good job just believing in each other,”” Berkowitz said. “”Each guy individually, at different parts of the fall, had various success.””
