The No. 14 Arizona women’s golf team finished in fourth place this week at the Pac-12 Conference Championships with a score of 887 (+23).
This year, Arizona hosted the Conference Championship at the Sewailo Golf Course at Casino Del Sol.
No. 6 UCLA won the event with an 862 (-2) as a team, 21 strokes ahead of second place Colorado (+19).
UCLA’s Lilia Vu led all players with a 209 (-7) while her teammate Mariel Galdiano finished second with a score of 215 (-1).
In a matchup that included five top-15 teams, UCLA led the Pac-12 on all three days and had two golfers in the top two at the end of each day.
For the Wildcats, Haley Moore and Krystal Quihuis led the team with a 219 (+3), good for a tie for fifth place.
“We had a few bad holes down the stretch that cost us a few shots,” said Arizona woman’s golf coach Laura Ianello in a press release by Arizona Athletics. “Haley hadn’t been feeling too good, but she came out on fire on the front nine.”
Coach Ianello believes the team started off hot, but struggled during the back nine.
“Early on we were rocking it, until we had a rough patch on the back nine,” Ianello said. “Haley has a heart of gold and gave it her best making the turn at five-under, but I think she got a little tired on the back nine. “
For Haley Moore, this was her ninth top-12 finish along with her eighth top-10 finish of the season.
Jessica Vasilic came in third amongst all Wildcats at 15th overall with a 224 (+8). Gigi Stoll came in fourth for Arizona and 22nd overall with a 228 (+12) in the championship.
Wanasa Zhou placed fifth for Arizona and returned to the Wildcats after missing the Ping ASU Invitational due to tendinitis. After winning the Mountain View Collegiate in March, Zhou struggled in the match and hit a 234 at the conference championship.
“We are NCAA Regional bound and we will find out tomorrow where we will play,” Ianello said. “We have a solid week to prepare for whatever course we are playing. Hopefully we will eventually be on our way to Chicago for the NCAA Championships.”
Up next for the Wildcats is the NCAA regionals that begin on May 8th at a location to be determined.
