Gas leak causes evacuation of campus buildings

A gas leak caused a major evacuation at the art, music and drama buildings, as well as Maroney Theatre, at about 2:15 today, said UAPD Sgt. Rolf Averill.

The University of Arizona Police Department set off an alarm at about 2:25, but they got all students, faculty and employees out by about 2:15 to 2:20, said Carrie Scharf, office specialist for the Art Building.

Robert Hershoff, an employee at the Museum of Art, said he smelled the gas as he was walking from the Creative Center of Photography near the Speedway Boulevard underpass.

The location of the gas leak remains unknown, Averill said, so the area around the Art Building was evacuated.

The Tucson Fire Department was on the scene at about 2:30, while UAPD was waiting for the Tucson Police Department to show up, Averill said.
