Saturday will mark the end to the Arizona women’s tennis teams regular season, with its last home game against their bitter rival, ASU.
The Wildcats are limping into this final home match after what was a disappointing weekend in California, that saw one match rained out and another match end in a tough loss to UCLA.
With a conference record that has the team at the bottom of the Pac-12 Conference and the extreme unlikelihood that Arizona will qualify for NCAA’s, this is most likely the final game of the team’s season.
Playing any other team this match would be meaningless, but the last match of the season against the rival Sun Devils might just give fans a sweet treat at the end of the season.
Shayne Austin and Inge Hendrikx will be celebrating as the team’s lone seniors. While it’s not the season both seniors would have hoped for, individually both have had another good season under their belt.
Austin has improved greatly from the player she was last year with a singles 13-8 record.
Coming into Pac-12 play, there was the possibly that she could be given second team all conference honors.
Hendrikx, though not featured a lot in singles play, was a solid doubles player all year for the Wildcats. Hendrikx’s leadership skills have been evident throughout the team’s play.
Their opponent from Tempe will be looking to ruin the Wildcats senior day, as the Sun Devils prepare for a run at the conference title, next week at the Pac-12 Championships.
The Sun Devils will go into Saturday’s match having only lost one match in the last month.
Stand outs for ASU include Senior Desirae Krawczyk, who sports a 23-10 singles record.
Freshman Sammi Hampton has been outstanding in her first year of college tennis, showing greatness in every phase of the game. With a singles record of 13-2, the future looks very bright for this Sun Devil.
As another women’s tennis season comes to a close, this has got to be one of Arizona’s head coach Vicky Maes’ toughest season.
Two players will end their careers at Arizona this weekend and will look to leave their mark as winners in their potential final match.
