Creative writing junior Kerri Lopez has more on her hands these days than homework.
The dancer and choreographer created Hobo Dance Productions, an underground dance movement offering master classes for seasoned dancers.
“”I was inspired when I was in California this summer by the attitude and atmosphere of all the classes out there,”” Lopez said. “”Professional dancers, beginning dancers, the competitive dancers, everyone in the industry came just to take classes together and really build an atmosphere in the classes.””
The electric atmosphere and Los Angeles-inspired choreography make these dance classes unique to Tucson. Lopez’s dancing is stimulating and moving, using hand and head movement to imply emotion. These are not technique classes, but focus more on the art of dance.
“”Whether it be the passion of jazz hip-hop, or the passion of lyrical contemporary, I want them to feel something when they’re done with class,”” Lopez said.
Jordan Marques, a dance freshman, was in Los Angeles with Lopez and is excited about the classes. Marques will soon start teaching for Hobo Dance Productions.
“”I like that we get to put our own styles into it, and we get a chance to improv, and do various things that aren’t always offered in a lot of classes,”” Marques said.
From jazz to hip-hop to contemporary, Hobo offers all types of dance except tap and ballet. Some dance experience is necessary to keep up in these classes.
“”I love it, it’s just a great place to release and relax, and it’s so much fun,”” said Lena Wolfe, a dance and optical engineering sophomore. “”It’s just nice to get a break from everyday life.”” Look out on the UA Mall on Fridays and you might see some of the class participants free-styling. Also, a group of members, chosen by audition, will perform at Bear Down Friday before the Homecoming and ASU football games.
