With all the talk revolving around Arizona’s future guards retracting their commitments, the present Wildcat point guard renewed his own.

Sophomore Nic Wise will return next season after spending much of the off-season contemplating his future in college basketball.

“”This is where I want to be,”” said Wise in a news release. “”I trust (UA head) coach (Lute) Olson and he wants me to be a leader – the captain – next season, and that’s what I’m going to do.””

Wise told the Daily Wildcat on May 9 that he hadn’t decided whether to transfer back to his home state of Texas.

Now, the 5-foot-9 Houston native will provide not only the anchor to UA head coach Lute Olson’s renewed fast-paced offense, but veteran upperclassman leadership as the team’s captain.

Last season, Wise averaged 9.2 points and a team-leading 4.4 assists per game. A detrimental injury late in the season crippled the Wildcats’ offense down the stretch, forcing Arizona on the proverbial NCAA March Madness bubble.

As a crucial piece to next year’s puzzle, Wise will join UA incoming freshmen guards Brandon Jennings and Brendon Lavender in the back court.

“”We’re happy to have Nic back,”” said Olson in a news release. “”His experience and his leadership are things we will rely on next season.””
