The Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals are being held in Malibu starting on Thursday, Oct. 17 until Sunday, Oct. 20, and four of the University of Arizona’s players will be competing: freshman Nick Lagaev, juniors Igor Karpovets and Carlos Hassey and senior Alejandro Reguant.
Karpovets is entering this tournament with spectators having high expectations for him as he has had an undefeated record this fall in both singles and doubles. He is 4-0 in each and his ability to rush to the net and control points will make every southwestern player in this regional tournament fear him.
Hassey’s last tournament was in the Wildcat Invitational and he has a singles record of 3-1. Hassey is an aggressive player with powerful shots. He attacks the court, and tennis viewers can always expect him to give his best effort against any competition.
The ITA regionals will be Lagaev’s third collegiate tournament ever. Lagaev proved how strong he was as a player in his last tournament at San Diego State. Here, as a freshman, he made it the championship in singles and it’s clear with every tournament he enters, that is the goal.
Lastly, senior Alejandro Reguant will be competing in his second tournament of the season this year. He first played in South Carolina, where he faced very high competition and still left with a singles win and two doubles wins. Because it’s been a while since his last competition, he’s surely fresh and ready to show off against the southwest region.
Overall, the UA looks strong in the region. Their previous tournaments against teams in the southwest have been at the Wildcat Invitational here at home, where they took both the singles and doubles titles, and at San Diego State Invitational, where they made it to the championship. Plus, with Karpovets’ unbroken record of wins, it’s a strong prediction that he has a chance of winning regionals this week.
