The University of Arizona Police Department responded to reports of a college-age suspect in possession of a gun at Arizona-Sonora Hall early Sunday morning, according to a UAlert sent out to the campus community.
The suspect was located and detained in a 4th floor dorm room. According to a later UAPD report, officers identified and interviewed the suspect “and removed a loaded handgun from the residence hall without further incident or injury to anyone.”
At 1:56 a.m. ann initial UAlert was sent notifying the campus community of a report of a person with a gun at the residence hall. This alert included an order for everyone in the nearby area to shelter in place.
This order was lifted at 2:34 a.m. In the same alert, the suspect was identified as a college-age male, seen with a gun in his waistband. Upon further investigation, UAPD officers discovered that the suspect was 17 and was not a student or employee at the university, according to later updates.
Police reported that the 17-year-old was intoxicated and was visiting a friend at the residence hall.
According to a UAPD report, “the juvenile male was arrested and later released to his parents with a referral to Pima County Juvenile Court for criminal violations of Disorderly Conduct, Weapons Misconduct (not of legal age to possess a gun), and being a Minor in Possession of Spirituous Liquor.”
UAPD directed all those affected by the incident to resources that can be found on the Campus Incidents web page.
