The University of Arizona’s men’s and women’s swim and dive team battled against in-state rival schools ASU, GCU and NAU on Saturday, Oct. 12 at noon in Tempe. Arizona came in second at the meet with the women finishing with a score of 80 behind ASU who scored 201, while the men fell 202-79 to the Sun Devils.
In the 400-yard medley relay, both the men’s and women’s Wildcat teams placed third following two of ASU’s teams. Their times were only seconds behind the first and second place finishers.
The meet’s fifth event was a 150-yard freestyle. Ralph Daleiden, a UA junior, placed third with a time of 1:08.13. Daleiden was less than half a second away from the second place finisher and less than a second away from the first place finisher, both from ASU.
During the women’s 150-yard freestyle, Amalie Mortensen, a UA graduate student, finished third overall with a time of 1:20.69. She was less than two seconds behind the first place finisher from ASU who recorded a time of 1:18.73.
The Wildcats took the first place spot in the men’s and women’s 50-yard breaststroke. UA junior, Eleni Gewalt, won her race finishing with a time of 28.09 scraping by the four following swimmers who finished in the 28th second as well. Daniel Young, a fifth-year UA student, won with a time of 24.10, defeating Andy Dobrzanski, who finished second place for ASU not too far behind.
Arizona wasn’t done as the Wildcats added on two more first place finishes during the 1-meter diving event. Brooke Earley, a UA junior, placed first overall with a score of 307.80. She was more than 15 points ahead of the second place athlete from NAU.
In the men’s meter diving, Gage Dubois took first place with a score of 330.45. Dubois won by more than 12 points ahead of Lane Stallworth who was the runner up from ASU.
Looking ahead
Both Arizona’s swim and dive teams will remain home as the Wildcats compete in their next meet against the University of Utah on Friday, Oct. 25 at 4 p.m. in the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.
