Arizona men’s hockey defeated ASU 3-2 in the final game of a long three game series on Oct. 12. This game was played six days after the second game in the series.
Haydn Gould was in net for the Wildcats making his third start of the season. Through his first two games of the season, Gould was 2-0-0 with a shutout win against ASU in his last start on Oct. 4th.
The team started with Hunter Hodgson and Nicholas Chiocca at defense with Sam Myers, Justin Hughes and Tyler Shetland starting at forward.
Arizona was unable to score on a power play early in the game which kept the score at 0-0 through the first 10 minutes of the game.
With 8:24 left in the first period forward Jack Kurrle got the Wildcats on the board going up 1-0. However, the lead would not last very long as ASU responded with a goal just 34 seconds later to tie the game back up at 1 all.
Coming out in the second period, ASU took the lead scoring quickly going up 2-1. Arizona, however, got on a power play and did not disappoint, cashing in with a goal by Justin Hughes to make the score 2-2. Through the first two series, Hughes led all Arizona skaters in points with four goals and three assists.
Heading into the final period the score was tied at 2. The tie was broken with 13:29 left in the third period when forward Riley Ruh got his first goal of his Arizona career to put the team up 3-2. Arizona was able to hold onto the lead winning the game and winning the series against ASU.
Looking Ahead:
Arizona is off for the next week and a half before a home series against University of Las Vegas Nevada on Oct. 24 and 25. The team is now tied for first in the Western Collegiate Hockey League standings with Colorado with nine points on the season.
