With Homecoming and Family Weekend behind us, midterms heating up and the election just wrapping up, campus has been anything but quiet. This edition of Police Beat will get you up to speed on some notable campus crimes from the peak of the semester — and it might just be wilder than your parents’ weekend debrief.
Man opts for UAPD officer’s bike over requested ride home
On Sept. 9 at around 8:45 a.m., a University of Arizona Police Department officer was flagged down near the Psychology building by a man unaffiliated with campus who was seeking a ride home.
According to UAPD case reports, while the officer sought approval to give the man a ride, the man mounted the officer’s bike and attempted to ride away.
The officer detained the man, who was subsequently charged with criminal damage.
Female student bitten, scratched walking home from party
On Sept. 12 around 1:30 a.m., UAPD received a report from a UA student on behalf of her friend, another female student, who had been assaulted near Olive Road and Second Street.
The friend had been walking home alone and intoxicated from Sigma Chi when the suspect, described as a homeless man in his 30s, assaulted her.
The student reporting the incident provided photo evidence of her friend’s injuries, which included scratch marks on both arms and two bite marks on her right arm.
The victim declined medical attention, as she had already cleaned the wounds and applied antibiotic spray. UAPD officers opened an investigation, gave the student her case number and encouraged her to contact the department for further investigation.
Psychology building bench warmer wanted for indecent exposure
On Sept. 14 around 12:45 p.m., UAPD officers were dispatched to the Psychology building after a female student reported that she witnessed a male individual exposing and touching his genitals on a bench.
Officers were unable to locate the suspect, who was described as being in his 40s with short hair, tattoos, dirty skin and wearing a white shirt and jeans.
The victim reported that she would recognize the suspect if she saw him again, but did not want to assist with prosecution and only wanted the information documented.
Student charged with domestic violence after public intoxication, assault
On Sept. 15, a male student was arrested on multiple domestic violence charges following a night of public intoxication and assault that led to interventions from both UAPD and the Tucson Police Department.
Around 3 a.m., UAPD received reports of a male passed out near Helen Street and Cherry Avenue holding a pipe. On the scene, officers found the student awake, with his pants unzipped and carrying a large nitrous oxide canister.
The individual who reported the student told officers that he had been raising the canister toward passing cars.
Though heavily intoxicated, the student, who was of legal drinking age, declined medical attention and requested a ride home, which UAPD provided.
According to the UAPD report, TPD responded to the student’s residence shortly after his drop-off, following an altercation with his roommates. TPD informed UAPD that the student was arrested and booked on multiple domestic violence charges after assaulting both roommates and breaking a screen door and a window with a rock.
Chi Omega and Fiji strike peace deal after furniture heist
On Oct. 17 at 2:30 a.m., UAPD responded to the Chi Omega Sorority house after a female student reported noises in the courtyard and found two gates and two doors unlocked.
Officers confirmed that the suspects had left but the student noted that her couch and leather trunk, as well as a lounge chair and sofa belonging to the sorority, were missing.
Security footage showed a masked individual using a ladder to climb over the courtyard wall, unlock the door and let in several other masked individuals. One of them was seen taking the lounge chair and umbrella.
Around 10 a.m., the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity president called UAPD, explaining that some fraternity members had taken the items as a prank, took selfies with them and then returned everything.
The female student later confirmed to UAPD that all property had been returned and that neither she nor Chi Omega wanted to pursue further action. The Dean of Students was notified.
Late-night brawl erupts on Tyndall Avenue due to racial comments
On Oct. 26 at 1:10 a.m., UAPD responded to reports of a large fight involving approximately 30 people at the intersection of Tyndall Avenue and Fourth Street. When officers arrived, around 20-30 individuals were present, although the altercation had ended.
According to the case report, the incident began after a large group of students left bars near the area. An unidentified individual was reported to have used a racial slur, which provoked members of Zeta Beta Tau and Kappa Sigma fraternities, who were involved in the altercation.
The report describes that a male student, whose name and affiliations are redacted, allegedly used racial slurs that led to an argument and physical altercation with another student, the victim. This student reportedly punched the victim in the face and ripped his sweater during the confrontation, which escalated as multiple students joined in to “help their friends,” according to the report.
Another student was hit in the face by an unknown person while attempting to break up the fight, knocking his tooth loose. The student received medical attention and did not wish to proceed with judicial action.
The victim declined to identify the student who used racial slurs as his assailant and said that he did not wish to receive medical attention or to be involved in judicial proceedings.
