Coming into the 2024 season, BYU held the highest odds to claim the Big 12 title. Now, with four weeks left in the regular season, the Cougars stand as the conference’s last remaining undefeated team. Iowa State University was also undefeated until their matchup with Texas Tech University on Saturday, where they took their first loss of the season.
Conference Games
Texas Tech 23 – Iowa State 22
Texas Tech pulled off a 23-22 upset over No. 11 Iowa State, spoiling the Cyclones’ bid for a historic 8-0 start. Quarterback Behren Morton, returned from a shoulder injury and led a 71-yard drive in the final two minutes which led to a Tahj Brooks’s 5-yard touchdown run with 19 seconds left. Morton threw for 237 yards and 2 touchdowns. Despite Iowa State getting more yards than Texas Tech (432-366) and a standout performances from quarterback Rocco Becht and receiver Jayden Higgins (10 catches, 140 yards), the Cyclones couldn’t capitalize on multiple red-zone opportunities, settling for 3 field goals.
Houston 24 – Kansas State 19
University of Houston pulled off a stunning 24-19 upset over No. 17 Kansas State University, ending the Wildcats’ four-game win streak. Houston quarterback Zeon Chriss played a pivotal role, completing all 11 of his passes for 103 yards and a touchdown while rushing 22 times for 75 yards, including the game-winning 41-yard touchdown run with just 2:26 remaining.
Kansas State led 19-10 going into the fourth quarter after Avery Johnson’s 61-yard pass set up a field goal in the third quarter. Johnson completed 23 of 39 passes for 238 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions which included a costly pick that was returned to the K-State 9-yard line early in the fourth. Three plays later, Chriss connected with Maliq Carr for a 1-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 19-17. After K-State failed to convert on its next drive, Chriss delivered his 41-yard burst to the end zone, putting Houston ahead. Kansas State had one last chance, but Johnson’s Hail Mary was deflected as time expired, sealing Houston’s upset win.
Arizona State 42 – Oklahoma State 21
Arizona State cruised to a 42-21 victory over Oklahoma State University, powered by Cam Skattebo’s 153 rushing yards, 121 receiving yards, and 3 touchdowns. Skattebo’s 274 all-purpose yards eclipsed Oklahoma State’s entire offense, marking him as the first ASU player since 2015 with 100+ yards in both rushing and receiving in a game. Quarterback Sam Leavitt added 303 passing yards and 3 touchdowns for the Sun Devils, who scored 28 unanswered points after a two and a half hour weather delay. Arizona State’s defense stifled Oklahoma State’s run game, limiting them to 84 yards.
UCF 56 – Arizona 12
University of Central Florida dominated the University of Arizona 56-12, snapping a five-game losing streak. Running back RJ Harvey led the way with 184 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns, helping UCF post its most balanced offensive performance of the season, with 602 total yards. New quarterback Dylan Rizk threw for 209 yards and 3 touchdowns, finding seven different receivers, including Jacoby Jones, who had five catches for 106 yards. Tight end Randy Pittman Jr. found the endzone 2 times, including a hail mary to end the first half.
Arizona struggled against UCF’s defense, managing only 261 total yards, including a season-low five rushing yards. UCF’s defense recorded 10 tackles for loss, four sacks and forced two turnovers. The Knights built a 28-0 lead early and never looked back, scoring on eight of their 10 drives and holding Arizona to just 2 touchdowns. Arizona also missed an extra point on the first touchdown and was unsuccessful at a 2-point conversion after the team’s second score.
Baylor 37 – TCU 34
Baylor University edged out a win against TCU 37-34, with Isaiah Hankins sealing the win on a 33-yard field goal as time expired. The Bears secured their third straight victory in a thrilling back-and-forth contest, while TCU saw its two-game winning streak come to an end.
Baylor’s Bryson Washington had a career night, rushing for 196 yards and 4 touchdowns. He was instrumental in setting up the final drive, converting crucial first downs and helping position Hankins for redemption after an earlier missed extra point. Quarterback Sawyer Robertson contributed 242 yards through the air, including a key fourth-down pass to Michael Trigg that moved the Bears into scoring range late in the game. Baylor’s offense totaled 499 yards, including 257 on the ground, marking their third consecutive game surpassing 250 rushing yards.
