As she enters her 17th season as head coach on the court, Joan Bonvicini’s actions off the court were recognized.
The UA women’s basketball head coach was the first-ever recipient of the Men’s Anti-Violence Partnership “”Woman of the Year”” award, an award that’s given to a woman who acted as a role model toward younger women and helped in the fight to end violence against women.
Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup presented Bonvicini with the award Sunday.
“”I’m proud that in some way I was able to contribute and volunteer my time, and to let women and children know that they have a voice when they need it, and there are people there that really care for them,”” Bonvicini said. “”Hopefully we can put a stop to (violence), but I was very proud and very honored.””
