EL PASO, Texas — No. 3 Arizona men’s basketball (12-0) survived its first road test 60-55 over the UTEP Miners. The Wildcats became the first Division I team to reach the 12-win plateau.
UA forward Stanley Johnson scored 17 points, grabbed six rebounds and had four steals in his first collegiate road game.
UTEP forward Vince Hunter led the Miners with a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds, but he fouled out with 8:09 left.
UA center Kaleb Tarczewski fouled out with 2:07 left, finishing with five points and five rebounds.
Arizona turned the ball over 17 times, while UTEP (6-4) gave up possession 18 times.
The Wildcats shot 45 percent from the field, 45 percent from the 3-point line and 58 percent from the free-throw line. The Miners shot 41 percent from the field, 30 percent from behind the arc and 44 percent from the charity stripe.
Game nuggets:
— In the first half alone, Hunter almost matched his season averages of 16.2 points and 10.1 rebounds
— There were four ties and two lead changes
— Arizona led for 34:25 of the 40-minute game
