Arizona women’s tennis traveled to Texas to face North Texas and SMU on back to back days this weekend. Arizona fell to North Texas 2-5 on Saturday, and then lost to SMU 3-4 on Sunday.
North Texas (5-7) started off the day strong, winning the doubles point over Arizona. Maggie Cohen and Marie Van Aelst lost 6-1 while the team of Lauren Marker and Paris Corley also lost 6-1 putting the Wildcats in an early hole. The weather affected both matches, as rain fell throughout the match.
Lauren Marker bounced back from the doubles loss and won her match (6-4, 6-4) against opponent Maria Kononova. However, her doubles teammate Paris Corley could not do the same and lost her match (6-3, 6-3). UNT sealed the victory with three straight wins to close out Arizona, as Van Aelst (6-4, 6-4), Camila Wesbrooks (6-3, 5-7, 6-3) and Maggie Cohen (6-2, 4-6, 6-1) could not overcome the slow start.
At 8-2, Arizona had one day to recover before they faced SMU (9-2). The meet began with a hard-fought doubles victory for Arizona. Teammates Lauren Marker and Paris Corley won their match 6-4, while Maggie Cohen and Maria Van Aelst lost 6-4. The doubles point came down to the final match, as Camila Wesbrooks and Devin Chypyha narrowly escaped with a 7-5 win to give the Wildcats an early advantage.
Lauren Marker (6-1, 6-3) and Camila Wesbrooks (6-1, 3-6, 6-2) gave Arizona two more points in the singles matches, but four straight losses after that gave SMU the victory for the day. Paris Corley, Devin Chypyha, Marie Van Aelst and Maggie Cohen were all defeated by their opponents as Arizona lost the meet 3-4.
The Wildcats will return on Friday, March 10 to face Colorado at 1:30 p.m. MST as the team looks to avoid dropping three straight matches.
