The Student Health Advisory Committee will hold the first Run For Your Life five-kilometer run around campus April 28, and organizers are looking for participants.
“”We just want to make our mark on the campus community, and this is just the event to get everybody together for a good cause,”” said Arvind Satyanarayan, one of the coordinators for the event.
SHAC members and organizers raised $500 and received donations from various vendors to hold the event, said Alaina Glatting, director of SHAC and one of the coordinators for Run For Your Life.
Campus Health Service also helped sponsor the event.
“”We have been wanting to do a 5K run for a few years, and Campus Health helped us get the whole thing started,”” Glatting said.
Satyanarayan said the event has been in the planning stages for two years and that it was a collective effort that helped to finally put it all together.
“”I am really enthusiastic about the event,”” Satyanarayan said. “”It’s exciting to see all the hard work finally pay off.””
Proceeds from the event will go to the Tucson Community Food Bank and UNICEF.
Glatting said the event is a milestone for SHAC, which is becoming a significant organization on campus.
“”This year has been huge for us,”” Glatting said. “”An ASUA organization has never held something this large before.””
The Run For Your Life 5K is one of the largest events SHAC has put together, and is just one of many events the group has organized in the past, Glatting said.
Organizers are expecting 150 to 200 registered participants.
SHAC has held events for World AIDS Day, Sexual Responsibility Week and Drug and Alcohol Awareness Day, according to the SHAC Web site.
SHAC has also started replacing the 30-year-old fitness stations located around campus with new weather-resistant stations.
SHAC works as a link between students and Campus Health through the Associated Students of the University of Arizona to promote healthy lifestyles on campus and hold different prevention events.
“”We want to be an organization that people know can answer their health questions,”” Glatting said.
