The University of Arizona’s Swim and Dive team split their first home meet of the season against the University of Utah, with the women’s team being victorious 151-149 and the men’s team falling 159.5 to 140.5. The meet took place over two days starting Friday, Oct. 25, and Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.
Both men’s and women’s team were able to rack up a combined 16 first place finishes throughout the two days.
The women were highlighted by standout performances from Malia Rausch, Brooke Earley, Ava Sutphin, Eleni Gewalt and Maryam Sheikhalizadehkhanghah, who all had at least one first place finish in an event.
Along with the individuals, the team performances were also very strong. The 200 Medley “A” team and the 400 Freestyle “A” team both took home first place finishes during the meet.
On the men’s side, Haakon Naughton was able to record a season best in 200 meter butterfly with a time of 1:45:42 and 46.86 for the 100 meter. Naughton won both of these races and is now No. 21 in the country for the 200 meter butterfly.
A standout event for the men’s team in the meet was the 100 meter freestyle. In this event, the team was able to sweep the podium as they took the top four spots with Ralph Daleiden taking home first place.
On the diving side for both teams, Brook Earley and Gage DuBois both scored well enough to take first place on day one in their respective events. Despite both their high points on day one, Earley and DuBois both came in second in their events on day two.
Looking Ahead:
Both the men’s and women’s team will head to University of Southern California next, for a meet on Nov. 8. The women’s team will stay in the Los Angeles area for another meet on Nov. 9 against University of California, Los Angeles.
The teams will then both participate in the Texas Diving Invitational which takes place between Nov. 15 and Nov. 17 in Austin, Texas.
