The University of Arizona volleyball team (13-8, 2-8 in Big 12) faced a 3-0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-20) loss against BYU on Saturday, Nov. 2 at noon in Smith Fieldhouse. This matchup marks the third consecutive loss for the Wildcats as they move into the latter end of the season.
Jordan Wilson led the Wildcats, tallying 9 digs and 18 kills and finishing with a .342 hitting percentage. Carlie Cisneros followed Wilson, completing the game with 11 kills and 9 digs.
Set 1
BYU opened the first set on a 3-point scoring run. Arizona answered back, scoring 4 straight points to take the early lead. In a back-and-forth set, Cisneros served an ace, narrowing the gap to 16-14 between the Wildcats and the Cougars. Arizona tied the set 24-24 but came up short after the Cougars scored the final 2 points of the set, including an ace.
BYU took a 1-0 match lead, winning the first set 26-24. Wilson led Arizona with 7 kills and Kiari Robey followed with 5 kills.
Set 2
Multiple lead changes occurred throughout the second set until Cisneros scored a kill that put Arizona up 14-10. BYU came back, tying the set 18-18 after a kill by BYU’s Brielle Kemavor. The Cougars went on a run later in the set, scoring the last 4 points to win 25-22, taking a 2-0 set lead. Wilson finished with 5 kills on a .500 hitting percentage in the set while Cisneros put up 3 kills herself.
Set 3
The Wildcats and Cougars matched points all throughout the final set, with each team unable to gain a steady lead. Alex Bower served an ace to help the Cougars tie 11-11. Cisneros went on a 3-point run herself, spiking 3 kills in a row to give Arizona the 17-15 lead. BYU pulled back ahead, taking control of the 22-18 lead.
The Cougars won 25-20 in the third and final set to secure a 3-0 match victory. Wilson led the set with 6 kills and Cisneros followed with 5 kills to lead Arizona. The Wildcats were held to their lowest hitting percentage of the match, .191.
Looking ahead
Arizona will return home as the Wildcats look to redeem themselves against Kansas State University on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. in McKale Center.
