The University of Arizona volleyball team has brought back its early season form, dominating opponents in the Big 12. The Arizona football team suffered a devastating loss, preventing them from reaching a bowl game in the postseason, but the Wildcats had a career and program-defining outing from wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan.
Team: Volleyball
The Arizona volleyball team has been on roll for the past few weeks, securing six straight victories within the Big 12 conference. Arizona has secured three victories prior to its most recent 3-1 victory on Nov. 27 over the University of Central Florida, surrendering only two sets in total.
Jordan Wilson and Jaelyn Hodge have been crucial in this stretch, with them putting up roughly 84 kills combined in their last three outings. With the departure of Sofia Maldonado Diaz last season, Wilson and Hodge have stepped up as both players smashed their previous season total of 312 and 309 kills, respectively. Hodge currently leads the team in kills with 367 and Wilson follows closely, tallying 361 kills.
Avery Scoggins has been the assist magnet this season, having 118 assists over the three matchups, including 49 in a single game against Iowa State. Scoggins has served the assisting role that had been filled by Ana Heath last season. Scoggins currently sits at 976 total assists, just 61 below Heath’s 2023 total of 1037 assists.
Despite an early win streak in the beginning of the season, following with nine losses midway through, the Wildcats have brought together a team that has shown significant improvement in many ways. The team currently has an 19-9 record, a far cry from the 8-23 record in the 2023 season.
Continuing this massive win streak, the Wildcats currently sit ranked No. 7 in the Big 12. Arizona has a final Big 12 matchup to end the regular season taking place in Lubbock, Texas against Texas Tech University on Nov. 29 at noon.
Player: Tetairoa McMillan – Football
Despite the 49-28 loss against TCU over the weekend, McMillan broke the University of Arizona’s career receiving yards record, previously held by current wide receiver coach Bobby Wade.
Wade previously held the record with 3,351 receiving yards from his stint at Arizona from 1999-2002. McMillan is now the Arizona all-time receiving yards leader as he currently boasts 3,355 yards after his 115-yard outing against TCU.
This was McMillan’s first game recording over 100 yards since the outing against West Virginia University on Oct. 26 where he reached 202 receiving yards. Additionally, this was his fifth game with over 100 yards so far in the season, just one short of his six games during the 2023 season.
McMillan will more than likely enter the 2025 NFL draft in the offseason and has been one of the best recruits in the nation as a wide receiver. Multiple outlets have McMillan projected as a top 10 pick in their mock drafts for the upcoming draft.
McMillan will be looking to have his collegiate career end on a high note as Arizona ends its season with the Territorial Cup on Nov. 30 at 1:30 p.m. against ASU in Arizona Stadium.
